Guardian Considerations

  1. Willingness.

–           Speak to the proposed Guardian and make sure that they are willing to assume the responsibilities of a Guardian.

 

  1. Suitability.

–           Would the Guardian make the same decisions raising your children as you would?

–           Do you believe that the Guardian shares your values?

–           Would the Guardian be dedicated to your children?

–           If the Guardian has their own children, would they treat your children on an equal footing?

–           Does the Guardian live in your community or will the children be removed from all their friends, their school and community activities?

–           Does the Guardian share your religious beliefs (if this is important to you)?

–           Does the Guardian have enough space in their home?

–           If a child has special needs, is the Guardian able to look after that child?

–           Is the Guardian young enough to raise your children?

–           Is the Guardian healthy or do they suffer any disabilities that could interfere in caring for your child?

–           Does the Guardian have a history of criminality or alleged child abuse?

 

  1. Finances.

–           Consider the financial needs of your children.

–           Does your Estate adequately provide for the children?

–           Is the Guardian financially self-sufficient?

–           Does the Guardian have the financial means to top up the child’s financial needs?

–           Can the Guardian be trusted with overseeing the children’s money?

 

  1. Compatibility.

–           How familiar are your children with the Guardian?

–           Do your children like the Guardian?

–           How familiar is the Guardian with your children?

–           Does the Guardian like your children?
